The compressor's copper winding and the copper or aluminium coils running along the back and sides are the main recoverable value - copper trades at a real premium over the steel body, which is why fridge scrap is priced differently from plain metal scrap. The insulating foam and plastic liner have no recycling value and are separated out during processing.

Once the gas is out, the compressor and copper coils go to metal recyclers, the steel body is baled for steel mills, and nothing is sent to landfill.
