Material type is the biggest factor
Every category of scrap - metals, e-waste, paper, plastics, batteries - trades at a different price because each one is processed differently and recovers a different amount of raw material. Within metals alone, copper is worth far more per kilo than steel, because copper is scarcer and more energy-intensive to mine fresh. This is why a single "scrap rate" for a whole household pickup doesn't exist - your final payout is really a sum of several different rates, one per item.
Purity and condition change the rate within a category
Not all copper is priced the same. Clean, unmixed copper wire fetches more than copper still attached to insulation or brass fittings, because the buyer has to spend extra effort separating it before it can be sold on. The same logic applies across categories: a fridge with its compressor intact is worth more than one that's been stripped, and paper free of lamination or heavy printing is worth more than glossy magazine stock.
