E-waste is one of the fastest-growing categories of household scrap, and also one of the most misunderstood - most people don't realise how much of it qualifies, or why it shouldn't go out with the regular garbage.
Why e-waste needs to be handled separately
Electronics contain materials - lead, mercury, and other heavy metals in circuit boards and batteries - that are hazardous if they end up in a landfill and leach into soil or water. They also contain recoverable materials like copper, gold, and rare earth elements in small quantities, which is why certified recyclers process e-waste through dedicated channels rather than general scrap sorting.
What typically qualifies as e-waste
Laptops, desktops, monitors, keyboards and peripherals, routers and networking gear, mobile phones, printers, and general IT hardware all fall into this category, alongside cabling and wiring. Data on old devices
If you're scrapping a laptop, phone, or hard drive, it's worth doing a factory reset or wiping storage yourself beforehand as general good practice - this is on the seller, not something QwikScrap performs, so don't skip it before your pickup.
